Nilkantheshwar Temple is one of the fascinating temples in Pune, set amidst the lush green valleys around the city. It’s dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known as Nilkantheshwar.

Although it’s a Shiva temple, it also has many different statues on the premises. They’re of various Hindu gods and goddesses and scenes from Hindu mythology. One of the scenes is also from “Samudra Manthan,” during which a poison came out of the ocean. Lord Shiva drank all of it and got a blue throat. Thus, the name Nil Kanth (blue throat).

It takes a short hike to reach Nilkantheshwar Temple Pune. From the top, you can get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area. It’s a superb offbeat tourist place in Pune.

Where is Nilkantheshwar Temple in Pune?

Nilkantheshwar Temple is on a hillock, about 40 km from Pune. It’s close to Khadakwasla and Panshet dams. From the parking area at the base of the hillock, you need to hike up for 30-45 minutes to reach the temple.

People come to Nilkantheshwar Temple to pray to Lord Shiva. The Shivalinga is decorated with flowers and leaves. People offer him milk and sweets. The large open area of the temple also has different sculptures telling stories from Hindu epics and Vedas.

Nilkantheshwar Temple attracts trekking enthusiasts too. It’s a short uphill trek of about a km long. The route is well-maintained and wide enough for people to walk together.

From the top, you can get a good view of the surrounding greenery and rivers flowing nearby. You can sit and admire the scenery in peace. On a clear day, you can see Khadakwasla Dam, Panshet Dam, and even the nearby forts like Sinhagad, Torna and Rajgad.

Many trekkers also come here for the spectacular sunrise/sunset view.
