Every corner of Pune has a story to tell, and there is nothing more exciting than to learn about places that hold historical significance. One such bright tourist spot of Pune lies near the Ordinance Factory, Bombay Sappers road- the legendary Holkar Bridge.
Dedicated to the Holkar family, this bridge has spooky stories and its history. Hop on a taxi from top car rental companies in Pune and add this to your itinerary while exploring Pune on your next visit.
All about the Holkar bridge
The then Peshwa, Madhavrao, constructed this certified Grade-II site during the Peshwa era, i.e. the 1800s, over the Mula-Mutha River. It is named after the Maratha leader Yashwanthrao Holkar who used to camp by the side of the river, Mula-Mutha.
The bridge is 548 feet long and has 19 arches underneath it. Thirty-three feet above the riverbed, the Holkar Bridge is quite high. It has teak railings along the side of the bridge to support the 15 feet broad roadway.
#Trivia: The Pune Municipal Corporation has constructed a bridge cum flyover and a river bridge over the original Holkar bridge to ensure the smooth running of traffic. The entire project cost the government ₹6620.26 lacs.
Nowadays, only light vehicles can pass over the Holkar Bridge. The walkway for pedestrians at the bridge connects Khadki to Yerwada.
To the south of the bridge is the grave of Vithoji Rao Holkar (a Sardar from the Holkar clan) and his wife. And to the north is the Holkar bridge cemetery that houses graves from the 1790s. A Shiva temple is also situated near the bridge.
#Trivia: The PMC has installed a real-time sensor machine in Mula-Mutha River to get flood alerts.
Location of the Holkar Bridge
The Holkar Bridge is situated in the Kirkee Cantonment Area. The sight is quite different from what it was nearly 20 years ago. It lies cosily nestled near the Ordinance Factory and Bombay Sappers main gate. It is approximately 2 kms from the Kirkee War Memorial, another popular tourist spot of Pune, and around a kilometre from the Kirkee market.
